Introduction to blog site

Assalamu a’laikum,

The idea of this blog is to improve communication between the UK Curriculum Coordinator at Manarat al Riyadh ( international boys section ) and students of both boys and girls sections.

Information provided will be relevant to IGCSE and A-level students.

You have probably all received your results by now, so congratulations to those who did well. Some of you have entered for the re-sits in October/November and you need to start revising in the holiday.

If you have any questions or comments, please post them anonymously.

UK Curriculum Coordinator
Mr. Yusuf Ashworth.

  1. Salam

I'm happy someone has finally done this. The school has great potential, but for some reason no one is taking advantage of it.

A very large problem, which I noticed was the lack of 1st Language English for the first year of IGCSE. Most Manarat students are plunged into intense SAT English up until Grade 8 and then out of no where they sit in 2nd language. This is a tremendous waste of time. In my opinion all kids should have 1st language English forced upon them and any students with truly low performance should be sent to 2nd language. The main problem was that a VERY large number of students had no 1st language on their IG report. This would seem very strange to universities.

Another issue is the lack of science practicles in IGCSE. I understand the time constraints, but 4 science periods could be managed into the time table if some dead-weight (Arabic classes in which students do nothing, but talk and annoy the teacher) was removed. With less Arabic classes, more students will be satisfied and to counter the decrease in lessons. The lessons could be made more efficient through the teachers ACTUALLY teaching.

The strangest thing was that during our Mocks we received Islamic Education projects as well as an Islamic Education and Arabic mock exam. This simply is not logical as most students didn't even bother studying for them. It is a burden and a waste of time.

The GPA is not properly handled. The University of Cambridge provides a GPA of 4.0, with the school going to 5.0. And as IGCSE students, only the 8 O-level subjects taken should affect said GPA. Islamic education, Arabic and physical education all affect it while they shouldn’t.
How could Islamic education even affect the grade? Our religion should never be a burden, but a blessing bestowed upon us. We should be taught Islam in a better manner, with no examinations or GPA. Through exams, we learn our religion for the wrong purposes. Allah سبحانه و تعالى does not look for good grades but instead proper ethics, which can never be achieved in such a way. The grades for IGCSE students should be in the form of A*s and As not As and Bs.

Thank you for starting this blog and I hope to see some changes made.

  2. I agree entirely that we need to provide the full 1st language course for IGCSE. We are shortly expecting the return of one teacher who is capable of delivering that, Mr. Lima Egan (Mujahid). There are of course many students who are not capable and I do believe that 2nd Language is more suitable for them. UK universities accept students with at least a ‘C’ at 2nd language for courses not directly related to the arts.

I agree whole-heartedly that more science practicals are required. Students should be exposed to the use of equipment and the process of observing and recording as an integral part of learning science. We do have plans to implement this ( a report was recently submitted) and are awaiting our full complement of staff.

For the Islamic Education projects, they were perhaps given out late and I agree that it’s better to finish of such work before they start.

For the grade issue that you raised, some teachers do give *s out for mock exams though others prefer not to so as to encourage students to work harder! It is also possible to ask for adjustment after publication of the final grades if e.g. a student did badly on the mock exam but performed well in the real exam.

I hope I have answered most of your questions to some degree of satisfaction.

  3. I have been pushing for 4 science periods a week for the past 7 years, to give more time for practicals.

Yusuf.... Mujahid may object to being called Lima!!!!

  5. hi, I do have to say that the "academic situation" in the boys section is still bearable since the majority of their teachers are quite highly qualified. The girls' English section of Manarat is a complete chaos. As of last year i heard that the AS girls had no teacher for physics, and inevitably all of them got C's. This year is no less of a chaos since a primary grade science teacher is teaching us AS Level Physics. It's quite sad really because physics is said to be one of the hardest subjects Cambridge has to offer.
Even chemistry is being taught by a teacher who is completely new to the system and the class is quite clueless about what we take in both of these subjects. Since i'm already writing I would like to give credit to the AS Level biology teacher and would like to add "she is hands down amazing"! Most of the girls come to school to realize that they have wasted 8 hours of their day and go back home to tutors and extra classes for help. This is ridiculous because parents are paying the school fees for a reason! The reason i'm writing here is because i want people to become aware of the very unfortunate "scarcity of qualified teachers" situation that the school has been experiencing for years now. If they can't make good use of the money we pay them by providing us with good education, then at least use it to publish advertisements to hire teachers who can "teach". I hate to be complaining like this but something needs to be done! Sharing these thoughts with anybody in the girls' section would be a complete waste of time due to the incompetent behavior of the school higher faculty and the lack of english speaking supervisors who are there for no use whatsoever. I'm writing this comment in complete frustration and i hope it strikes you that we do need help and that you will find a solution to it if possible. I hope i'm not asking for too much. Thank you.
P.S. this is a student writing.
